A multimillion-dollar central Tauranga mansion complete with geothermal bore and a weather-reading irrigation system has been named as one of the winners of the regional House of the Year awards.

The home, built by Riordan Construction, was featured as one of the stars of the Bay of Plenty/Central Plateau Registered Master Builders 2014 House of the Year awards at ASB Arena on Saturday night.

Riordan Construction won the Westpac New Homes over $2 million for the new home built in Tauranga's CBD.

The company also won the Outdoor Living award and the Resene Sustainable Home award. Paul Riordan said he was quietly confident he would win the category. There were several unique features that made the home a "standout", he said.

"It's such a beautiful home. What makes it stand out, the fact it's in central Tauranga but is such a big home on such a big section," Mr Riordan said.

"It's traditional weatherboard with timber window boarding. It's got all the traditional features but with new-world specifics and technology, like a geothermal bore."

The bore joins an air handler and other state-of-the-art features, including an irrigation system connected to atmospheric sensors, which reads weather conditions and irrigates the lawns in response.

Mr Riordan said building the house was a career highlight.

"It was fantastic. I remember one day going on to the site and the drilling rig was there drilling the geothermal bore. My guys were building the pool house and there was a truck on the site [pumping concrete onto a wall]...

"There was machinery everywhere and I said to my friend, 'mate, this is like a sandpit and all these toys are my toys'."

In 2012, Riordan Construction scooped the Supreme Award in the national House of the Year competition. Mr Riordan hoped he could do the same this year.
