UPDATED 3.50pm: Firefighters at a Mount Maunganui house fire have now got the blaze under control.

A Northern Fire Communications Centre spokeswoman said the fire in the house on Aintree Place, off Ascot Rd, was now contained and understood to no longer be any risk to neighbouring properties.

The small fire took place in a medium sized house and was reported to 111 about 3.25pm.

Power authorities have been called.

EARLIER: Firefighters are responding to a report of a house on fire in central Mount Maunganui.

Emergency services have been called to the house, in Aintree Place, off Ascot Rd, this afternoon.

It is understood flames and smoke has been seen coming from the house.
