Otumoetai's 116-year-old classroom will be removed and taken to the Historic Hillage, it has today been confirmed.

Friends of the Village coordinator and city councillor Catherine Stewart last week said the classroom was part of Tauranga's history and would fit in well with the village.

At that stage, the Historic Village had not finalised where the money was coming from to fund the shift and the cost of establishing the building on its new site.

It has today been announced the Ministry of Education will fund the move.

Council property spokesman Anthony Averill confirmed the funding after a meeting with Mayor Stuart Crosby and Tauranga City Councillors this afternoon.

"Councillors were keen to discuss how we could assist with the future of the classroom retaining it in the city," he said.

The campaign to keep Otumoetai's 116-year-old classroom on its original site appeared to have failed last week and plans were underway into its move.
