Te Ranga School and Oropi School are closed today as slips and flooding continue to create mayhem in the Western Bay of Plenty.
Oropi principal Andrew King said he had closed the school because he was concern the poor weather would create problems getting to or from the school.
"I had 180 kids to think about. There's a high chance someone will get stuck," Mr King said.
"We don't have much flooding damage, but we are very isolated."
Ohauiti Rd was still closed this morning because of slips under the road and a slip on Oropi Gorge Rd reduced traffic to one lane.
"There's also a lot of surface flooding on Glue Pot Rd and Pyes Pa Rd."
Mr King said he rushed to get students home yesterday to such a point, he had forgotten about himself and ended up stranded in Oropi.
"I could have taken the smaller back roads but I've only got a small 2WD car, so I stayed with the school chairperson for the night," he said.
Te Ranga Board of Trustees stated it closed the school today because there was no guarantee they would have power restored this morning.
The board said the roads were unsafe to travel on and the school was unable to clean due to a lack of power and water.
Despite State Highway 29 being closed due to a large slip, Kaimai School was still open today.
