Former Katikati College student Adam Fisher made what is becoming an annual working visit back to his home country last weekend.
He was part of the massive entourage that makes up the V8 Supercar travelling circus as it transplanted itself to New Zealand for the fourth round of this year's series at Pukekohe Park Raceway.
Adam is one of two mechanics looking after Kiwi driver Fabian Coulthard's car for the Brad Jones Racing Team.
Unfortunately, Coulthard almost became the forgotten Kiwi last weekend with Scott McLaughlin and Shane van Gisbergen stealing the headlines. But he nevertheless returned to Australia having retained third place in the championship with three top 10 finishes in the four races held over the long weekend.
Being part of a motorsport team wasn't part of some big master plan for Adam though, and even with dad Ray owning George's Autos, a career in the automotive industry wasn't an automatic choice.
"I got an apprenticeship in Auckland at Continental Cars that I finished eight or nine years ago. But it wasn't really a career path - it was an opportunity and I took it," Adam said.
He then found himself head mechanic at the Triple X Porsche racing team - a position he held for six years before the team folded.
Sticking with Porsche, he headed to Australia.
"I went and ran a Porsche over there for a bloke then someone said 'go and ask Brad Jones Racing if they need a mechanic'. They did and I got the job there and then," he said.
That was three years ago - the year before Coulthard joined the team.
"When Triple X closed down I didn't really want to go to Australia (to live) at that stage and it was just a job opportunity."
It is, though, a different and more exciting working life than that of an eight to five mechanic.
Adam is the number two mechanic on Coulthard's car. Each driver has two mechanics and two engineers.
There are five Kiwis in the team making the Pukekohe round of the championship a big one for the whole team, not just Coulthard.
"Preparation is the majority of the work," says Adam.
"At the race track you are just fixing (things) and pit stops. You can end up working through the night though - we've done that a couple of times."
Adam gets on well with Coulthard, and knew him from his time on the New Zealand circuits.
"He's a good guy and he's definitely got it in him to win the championship - hopefully he'll do it this year."
He has scored one victory this season, at Winton, and is now 117 points behind series leader Mark Winterbottom.
Once the dust had settled on last weekend's racing, it was a case of packing everything up ready to be shipped back to Australia for the next round in Perth.
"Then we fly out Monday.
"Between meetings we strip the car down, back to the basic shell, every time and rebuild it with new parts. In the off season the car is fully stripped down and it's a chance to get any major repairs done.
"During the racing you are standing around doing not much - except for the pit stops, then it's a mad rush."
Being part of the series means plenty of travel - and not just within Australia and New Zealand - Adam has visited the United States, China and Abu Dhabi.
"You don't usually see much though," he says.
He did, however, manage a few days at Bowentown with family on his New Zealand visit.
