UPDATE 8.48am: The water-main break suspected to be responsible for an outage at The Lakes has turned out to be an open water-supply valve which had drained the reservoir overnight.

Water is expected to return to normal for affected residents now, a Tauranga City Council spokesman said.

EARLIER: Homes in The Lakes are without water this morning due to a water-main break.

A Tauranga City Council spokesman said he was unable to say how long the outage was expected to last or how many homes were affected.

It was likely that other properties in the area would notice discoloured water, he said.

More soon.
