UPDATED 1.29pm: Papamoa and Greerton firefighters are working to extinguish six small unpermitted fires in rural Welcome Bay.

The two brigades were called to reports of a scrub fire about 12.35pm.

Fire service northern communication shift manager Scott Osmond said the fires were probably started to burn tree cuttings, or something similar.

He said rural fire authorities were heading to the Waitao Rd property due to the lack of a fire permit during the restricted open fire season.
