The police dive squad is expected to join the search for a man suspected of drowning today while fishing at Kauri Point, north of Katikati.

Police, coastguard and members of the public, on the water and the shore, are already scouring the area for the 40-year-old man and divers will join later.

Police have said the man jumped off the wharf about 2pm to try to retrieve his fishing rod, which had been pulled into the water after hooking a stingray. The man vanished after getting into difficulty in the current.
