Goat shooting case put off

Two Katikati men will appear in Tauranga District Court next week, accused of shooting a goat.

Carl Ian Williams and Stephen Frederick Bowman appeared in Tauranga District Court today.

Williams faced one breach of the Animal Welfare Act 1999 and Bowman is facing one charge of cruelty/ill-treatment of Animal.

Both men were remanded on bail until November 20.

Under the Animal Welfare Act, anyone who kills an animal in such a manner that the animal suffers unreasonable or unnecessary pain or distress can face a maximum fine of $100,000 or up to five years' imprisonment.

Williams was sentenced to community detention and fined $3500 last month after video footage emerged of him running down swans with a jet boat in the Tauranga Harbour in December 2012.
