A woman had to be flown to hospital after being hit in the head by tractor forks.

The Tauranga-based TrustPower TECT Rescue Helicopter was called to Rangiwaea Island about 2.20pm. Pilot Todd Dunham said a 51-year-old woman was hit on the head.

He said the forks were dislodged on the tractor boom and fell on her resulting in a head laceration.

"The accident could have been a lot more serious but appeared to be a glancing blow."

Mr Dunham said because of the location of the incident the rescue helicopter was called and the woman was flown to Tauranga Hospital for further treatment.
