Hung jury over assault

The trial of a Mt Maunganui man accused of assaulting a 16-year-old Brazilian foreign exchange student in a Tauranga bar in 2011 leaving him with serious facial wounds has ended in a hung jury.

Max Roberts, 20, whose trial began in Tauranga District Court on Monday, denied one count of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

After almost six hours of deliberation yesterday the jury failed to reach agreement on a verdict.

Police allege the victim was assaulted by Roberts in the early hours of November 27, 2011, after he managed to gain entry to the former De Bier Haus bar on The Strand.

There will be a second trial, but the date is yet to be scheduled, and matter will next be called in Tauranga District Court on August 16.
