Bellevue fatal crash driver sentenced

By Sandra Conchie

The driver who struck and killed 84-year-old Velma Zandstra has been sentenced to 50 hours community work and ordered to pay $500 reparation for emotional harm.

Renee Marie Jones, 34, hit Mrs Zandstra as she pulled out of her driveway on Windsor Rd, Bellevue about 11am on October 10, 2012.

Jones pleaded guilty to careless driving causing death on May 3.

Today Judge Robert Wolff did not impose a disqualification from driving on Jones as he said it would likely result in her losing her job - something Mrs Zandstra's family did not want.

The family indicated they would donate the $500 reparation payment to Ronald McDonald House and St John Ambulance, charities Mrs Zandstra passionately supported.
