A section of Oceanbeach Rd was cordoned off yesterday while armed police responded to a domestic incident in Mount Maunganui.
Detective Sergeant Darryl Brazier said police were called to an alleged domestic assault at a house near Concord Ave about 8.30am. .
About eight police officers, including detectives. were on hand to arrest a man.
Tauranga resident James Smith was heading towards Mount Maunganui when he encountered a police road block at the intersection of Girven Rd and Oceanbeach Rd.
"I just saw the guy, who was just being bundled out of the house, and they put him on the driveway."
Mr Brazier said police were armed as a precaution.
"There were no issues and one man was arrested without incident," he said.
Road checkpoints were put in place for about half an hour, he said.
A Mount Maunganui man appeared in Tauranga District Court yesterday charged with male assaults female, unlawful possession of ammunition and a charge of receiving. He was remanded without plea until his next appearance on June 6.
Police opposed bail in court due to concerns for the victim but Judge Paul Geoghegan said he was satisfied the man could be bailed on strict terms, including a nightly curfew.
