Police are searching for three men who invaded a Waihi house and assaulted a man armed with garden tools they found on the property.

Detective Simon Everson of the Waihi CIB said three men smashed in the back door of a Mangatoetoe St property about 1.20am today.

They went inside the house and started smashing everything up with the garden tools they found outside the house."

They threatened the two occupants, a male and a female, demanded cash and cellphones and assaulted the male," he said. "They were given a handbag with an amount of cash in it and two cellphones."

The three men ran from the house and a vehicle was heard leaving shortly after.

The man was left with minor injuries.

Mr Everson said the victims claimed not to know their assailants and there seemed to be "no motive whatsoever".
