Bay bred singer celebrates X Factor NZ progress

A Tauranga performer is "stoked" to be among the top 24 contestants in The X Factor NZ singing competition.

Jessie Matthews, who spent most of her life in Tauranga but currently lives in Hamilton, was selected from The X Factor NZ boot camp on Monday night, where she sung Someone Like You by Adele, to go on to the judges' retreat section of the show.

"It was a mix of emotion really, on my first day of boot camp I didn't necessarily sing badly but on a personal level I felt I was singing badly. Singing Adele was wicked, it was the best I've sung through the competition," she said.

While growing up in Tauranga, Miss Matthews, 34, spent most weekends performing with her father and siblings in the Matthews Family Band.

She left Tauranga to study when she was 21. Entering The X Factor NZ was a "platform" to get her name out there, she said.

The X Factor NZ airs on TV3 on Sundays at 7pm and Mondays at 7.30pm.
