Serious crash in Karangahake Gorge

By Genevieve Helliwell

Two people have been taken to hospital following a serious crash in the Karangahake Gorge today.

One person was trapped and had to be cut from their vehicle after a two-car collision on the Waihi-side of the gorge, near Queen's Head.

Northern Fire Communication shift manager Scott Ormond said the crash happened just before 11am.

He said one person was trapped in a car and another person from the other vehicle had to be taken to hospital by ambulance.

Volunteer fire crew from Waihi and Paeroa brigades attended the crash, he said.

The road was closed and traffic was being diverted.

"The latest update I have from Waihi said they were assisting traffic and they needed contractors with grit because the road was very slippery".

Mr Osmond said tow trucks had arrived at the crash scene to remove the vehicles.

Police and St John were also called to the crash.
