A Tauranga woman is facing a careless driving causing death charge after an elderly woman was hit and killed while on her daily walk.

Police say Velma Zandstra, 84, of Bellevue was walking on the footpath about 11am on October 10 last year when she was hit by a car backing out of a driveway on Windsor Rd, Tauranga.

Renee Marie Jones, 34, from Bellevue, faced a charge of careless driving causing death in Tauranga Registrar's Court yesterday.

The defendant, who attended court accompanied by members of her and Mrs Zandstra's family, is yet to plead to the charge. She is due back in court on April 11.
