Teenager jailed for taxi driver assault

A Pyes Pa teenager who bashed and robbed a Tauranga Mount Taxis driver in January is behind bars.

Judge Louis Bidois refused bail to Timote Manu, 19, after he pleaded guilty to a charge of aggravated robbery and two charges of burglary in Tauranga District Court yesterday.

Manu has admitted he punched the driver in the face and head at least 14 times in the taxi and then landed more blows on the roadside before rifling through the taxi to try and find items to steal.

He was chased down by nearby residents who went to the victim's aid and held Manu until police arrived.
