Scientists have assured Maori that the effects of the dredging to deepen the Port of Tauranga's shipping lanes will be "looked at in some detail".
The issue arose at yesterday's Tauranga Harbour Symposium and saw Professor Chris Battershill from the University of Waikato's Chair of Coastal Science offer assurances to iwi representatives in the audience.
Scientists have commenced preliminary studies on the dredging which was signed off by the Government this week.
Dredging was due to start at the end of the year.
