By Staff reporter

A 600km journey started with a hiss and a roar at Pilot Bay this morning when about 25 jet ski's took off for the Bay of Islands in a charity event.

The jet skiers are set to travel 600km to Russell, in the Bay of Islands, in an effort to raise $40,000 for the Melanoma Foundation of New Zealand.

The event started in Tauranga this morning and will be broken up into six stages. Each leg of the run will cover about 100km.
