Culprit sought over mystery rash

By Amy McGillivray

A Mount Maunganui child is covered in a painful rash after swimming at Pilot Bay on Sunday.

Charli, 7, had to be picked up from school early on Monday after the rash broke out, mother Yvonne said.

A doctor told her he believed it was sea lice but her mother was not convinced. Her husband, who also ended up with the rash on his ankles from paddling in Pilot Bay, developed an identical looking rash in Fiji some time ago and was told it was a result of jellyfish.

On Tuesday the Bay of Plenty Times reported a former public health service staff member's suspicion that the rash her son developed at Waihi Beach was the result of microscopic jellyfish called hydromedusae.

Toi Te Ora Public Health Service medical officer of health Jim Miller had not received any reports of such rashes on Monday but has since been asked to review Charli's symptoms.
