Charges for towing teens on skateboards

By Staff Reporter

A man who agreed to tow teenagers on skateboards behind his car has been charged with reckless driving causing injury.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion said the man was towing skateboarders behind his car on Taurikura Dr in the Tauriko Industrial Park on October 4 when a 14-year-old fell off and broke his collar bone.

The boy also suffered extensive bruising and was taken to hospital after being unconscious for a short time after the accident, he said.

``This is ridiculous behaviour by people who should know better,'' Mr Campion said.

``It's the sort of behaviour that will end in death and serious injury if these people don't stop acting irresponsible. It's simply irresponsible for a car driver to tow a skateboard along a roadway. I'm urging people to be sensible.''

A man will appear in Tauranga District Court on Friday.
