A Tauranga business is doing its bit to give hundreds of people the Christmas they deserve.

Gilmours in Cameron Rd has recently started a weekly donation to the Tauranga Community Foodbank, which owners Bryan and Maria Guildford described as a worthy charity that assisted desperate families.

"Not only at Christmas but more so then, times can be tough and we wanted to be able to give back in some way and assist others who really needed it," said Mrs Guildford.

At the store on Tuesday, the couple spoke to the Bay of Plenty Times about why they decided to support the foodbank.

Mrs Guildford said staff wanted to donate to a local charity and decided the foodbank was the one charity they wanted to support.

"The idea was to support one charity long-term rather than lots of smaller donations to many charities or organisations and by doing that we can concentrate our efforts to assisting the one organisation," Mrs Guildford said.

Each Wednesday, a volunteer from the foodbank arrives at the store and picks up the donated goods.

The amount donated each week depended on how much stock was ordered and what had sold - sometimes the store donated a couple of boxes of food while other weeks the store could donate a pallet load, Mr Guildford said.

The couple took over the store about a year ago and formalised their support for the foodbank in recent weeks.

"It's something we and the staff feel very strongly about and we are happy that we are able to contribute and make a difference," Mr Guildford said.

The store has also reached an agreement with the foodbank to allow it to purchase any items at cost price. "We won't be making any profit of what they buy but because we buy in bulk means we can get it pretty cheap so we wanted to be able to pass these benefits on to them," Mrs Guildford said.

"We're not a big business, we're a business that supports other local businesses and we hope that others will see this and make their own contribution to the foodbank."

Foodbank chairman Mike Baker was thrilled to have the support from Mr and Mrs Guildford and the Gilmours team.
