Stabbing accused's fitness to stand trial questioned

A determination on a Bay man's fitness to stand trial over the stabbing of a shopkeeper at Katikati's Park Rd Dairy in March is expected to be resolved next week.

Lee Regustly Aholima, 46, from Katikati, whose attendance in Tauranga District Court yesterday was excused, has been charged with one count of  wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and aggravated assault.

The charges relate to a March 16 attack on Ramandeep Singh, who suffered more than 10 stab wounds, and Mr Singh's aunt who was hit when she went to her nephew's aid.

Next week a Tauranga judge is to consider psychiatric reports and decide on Aholima's fitness to stand to trial.

Aholima remains in the care of Henry Bennett Centre.
