Driver hits house, taken to hospital

By Joseph Aldridge

A woman in her sixties was taken to hospital after driving her car through a fence and into a house in Waihi yesterday afternoon.

The woman was believed to be driving home from Cooks Beach in the Coromandel, Waihi Chief Fire Officer Moe Stevens said.

"We assume she went to sleep and veered off the road and went through a fence and into an older house that was being done up."

No one was at the property when the car smashed into it, however the house sustained "quite a bit of damage", Mr Stevens said.

"A little porch on the front of the house has been completely demolished."

Mr Stevens said the female driver was injured in the accident and was taken to Thames Hospital by a St John ambulance crew.

A neighbour said she was at a funeral and didn't see the accident, but she saw the damaged house when she arrived home.

"My father-in-law lived there and he's not long moved out. Thank goodness he wasn't there because it's crashed right into his bedroom."

The neighbour said the house had been recently sold to a local builder who was doing the house up with the intention of moving in with his young family.
