Man critical after car explosion

UPDATED 12.12: The Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance transported a Waikato Hospital ICU retrieval team to Tauranga Hospital this morning to pick up the man who sustained second degree burns to this face and hands from an explosion early this morning.

He was transported to Tauranga Hospital early this morning, where he was stabilized for transport to Waikato.

UPDATED 11.09: A Te Puke man who was in a critical condition at Tauranga Hospital this morning after his car exploded has now been tranferred to Waikato Hospital.

UPDATED 10.41: A Te Puke man is in a critical condition at Tauanga Hospital after the car he was working on this morning exploded.

The 42-year-old was tinkering with a car at his son's house at 4.30am when the car became engulfed in flames, inflicting serious burns to the man.

EARLIER: A car explosion has resulted in serious burns for a Te Puke man working on an early morning fix-it job.

The 42-year-old was taken to Tauranga Hospital after emergency services were called to his property at 4.25am today.

The man received deep 30 per cent burns to his hands and face and was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

He had been underneath the body of his car working on it when the vehicle exploded, a St John ambulance spokesman said.
