Bomb shell found in cupboard

UPDATED: 4.57pm: An unexploded mortar shell found in the hot water cupboard of an unoccupied Kingswood Rd house has been safely removed.

Tauranga police Senior Sergeant Nigel Ramsden said the Auckland Bomb Squad was called and removed the shell about 4.30pm.

It was discovered by a real estate agent, he said.

``Apparently it had been there a long time.''

EARLIER STORY:

The police bomb squad is on its way to Tauranga following the discovery of a shell in a hot water cupboard.

Tauranga Police Senior Sergeant Mark Pakes said police would not release the address of the Tauranga property where the shell was found as they were trying to keep the public out of the area.

The house has been evacuated and the bomb squad is due to arrive from Auckland later this afternoon.

Mr Pakes said he understood the shell had been in the cupboard for quite a while.
