Briefly: Penguins head agenda

Penguins head agenda

The country's keenest penguin enthusiasts will meet at the Oamaru Opera House tomorrow and Friday for the eighth Penguin Symposium. The biennial event will focus on penguins of New Zealand, Australia and the sub-Antarctic Islands, with an emphasis on the conservation and management of the Fiordland crested penguin. Other topics to be discussed include: the captive management of blue penguins during the Rena oil spill last year and reproductive success in yellow-eyed penguins.

Police search home

Members of Rotorua's Armed Offenders Squad and CIB searched a Kaharoa home yesterday morning. Detective Senior Sergeant Zane Smith of the Rotorua police said the search warrant was part of Rotorua police's ongoing efforts to reduce the effects of methamphetamine-related crime in the community. As a result, a 34-year-old man will appear in the Rotorua District Court on July 16 on firearms, drug and receiving charges.
