The second burst of heavy rain in days is now moving into Bay of Plenty and Coromandel - and just skirting the eastern side of Northland this afternoon.
Latest data and images show the main band of rain clearly feeding into Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Plenty.
WeatherWatch.co.nz says the rain warnings in force by MetService are at the lowest end of the warning scale but are relevant given the big rainfall totals in days.
There were earlier concerns that heavy rain in Northland could cause more problems. Predictions yesterday were that the heavy rain would fall mostly to the east of Northland - but that a jog to the west could see concerning rainfall amounts for the flood hit region.
But the weather gods appear to be smiling on Northland today - with the bulk of the rain continuing to fall offshore to the east. The risks for heavy rain in Northland are lower today, although WeatherWatch.co.nz says areas south of Whangarei may see another 40 to 50mm of rain today in some pockets which could cause localised minor flooding.
The bulk of the rain - and to a much lesser extent, the wind - will continue to feed in to Coromandel, Bay of Plenty and East Cape/Gisborne for the rest of Wednesday.
In Auckland conditions will be wet and possibly a little windy tonight in exposed areas - but no serious issues are expected.
WeatherWatch.co.nz says there is a moderate risk of surface flooding across Bay of Plenty and Coromandel today with a moderate to high risk of slips.
Wind damage is not expected.
Conditions will improve for the upper North Island on Thursday with the next burst of sub-tropical rain expected later on Saturday.
Meanwhile the lower South Island has hardly had a mention lately - despite having some of the best weather in the country in recent days. Temperatures have been mild with plenty of sun. But unsettled weather is also expected across the deep south, starting on Thursday, with a cold change moving in on Sunday.
