Stabbing accused on bail while victim remains in hospital

By Court Reporter

A teenager accused of stabbing a man in Welcome Bay on Sunday morning has been let out on bail.
The 19-year-old beneficiary, who appeared in Tauranga District Court yesterday charged with assault, was remanded on bail without plea to reappear on December 13.
He has interim name suppression and has since been charged with attempted murder.
The 36-year-old victim, understood to be the boyfriend of the teenager's mother, remains in a stable condition in Tauranga Hospital after undergoing surgery for stab wounds to his stomach and back.
Police allege the teenager stabbed his victim with a large kitchen knife and the injured man then ran from his Osprey Dr driveway and eventually collapsed just past the intersection of Portland Rd.
The accused's bail conditions mean he is able to continue to work but must abide by a home curfew from 2pm to 4am.
