Bay girl flown to Starship after fall

A two-year-old Ohauiti girl is today in Auckland's Starship Children's Hospital with serious head injuries after falling from a metal railing outside a Western Bay supermarket.
The girl was airlifted from Tauranga Hospital early today suffering from a delayed reaction to the fall and was this morning in a stable condition.
It is understood a medical team of three people flew to Tauranga with specialist equipment to stabilise the girl's injuries before another plane arrived from Starship Hospital to take the girl to Auckland.
A St John Ambulance spokesman told the Bay of Plenty Times the girl had been ``swinging'' on a metal railing outside the supermarket when she fell backwards and hit her head yesterday afternoon.
It was unknown today what supermarket the accident happened at.
She was looked after by her parents but began vomiting and was becoming ``confused'' about three hours later, he said. Concerned, the girl's parents took her to Accident and Healthcare doctor's surgery on Second Ave where she was referred to Tauranga Hospital for a scan.
Western Bay St John area manager Jeremy Gooders said ambulance officers were called to take the girl from the doctor's surgery to Tauranga Hospital at 6.30pm yesterday.
Mr Gooders said the girl's injuries were recorded as serious but that local ambulance staff had little more to do with treating her other than providing transport.
Child head injuries is a highly specialised area of medicine, so a team of surgeons flew to Tauranga with specialist equipment to treat the girl.
The case comes one month after a five-year-old Tauranga boy was taken to Auckland's Starship Hospital during a mercy dash involving Northland's Lion Foundation Air Ambulance.
The boy was injured in a trampoline accident on January 5 and was flown out of Tauranga.
