Sonya Korohina from Tauranga Art Gallery shows us inside her wardrobe
How would you describe your style? Sonya-style.
I tend to please myself and enjoy playing around with volume, layers, colour and tailoring.
What's your favourite piece in your wardrobe and why?
I love my Vita Cochran headpiece that has clusters of red roses and soft green tulle leaves. I look a bit like Friday Kahlo when I wear it. Or so I tell myself. Vita will be doing a project with the Tauranga Art Gallery in 2018.
What do you wear to work?
Working in the arts sector I get to have fun with what I wear. I am inspired by New Zealand designers such as Kowtow, Kate Sylvester and Zambesi. I favour mixing garments with vintage or even sometimes items from my daughter's dress-up box. Shhhh, don't tell anyone.
What's your weekend "uniform"?
My father's old denim work shorts. I have a number of pairs that I wear with a white shirt and pink lipstick.
What's your oldest piece of clothing?
I love my three generations of Brownie and Girl Guide badges that belonged to my grandmother, mother and now me.
What's the latest piece you've bought?
Summer heels from Moochi.
What's the most you've spent on an item of clothing?
I buy a couple of investment pieces each year so over the last 15 years have built a collection of garments that I mix and match. I believe in supporting local shops so most of my purchases go back into the local economy.
How has your style changed over time?
Believe it or not, it hasn't. I am still wearing a variation of the same look that I had when I was at school. Earlier this year I purchased a pair of wide leg pants from Kowtow, the shape being reminiscent of a pair I bought in the late 80s from Thornton and Hall.
What do clothes mean to you?
I love fashion - it can lift your mood and shape your day. There's nothing like waking up tired and grumpy, pairing a bright lipstick with your best dress, and you're ready to take on the world.
