A spectacle of flying hemlines, frills and hopefully not too many spills is happening at Waihi Beach this weekend.
Frocks on Bikes is once again taking to the neighbourhood and after the success of last year's, it will be another chance for locals to have fun and see Waihi Beach in style, says organiser Anna Schroder from Waihi Beach Community Events and Promotions.
"Our first event was last year and that was so fantastic that we wanted to do it again. It's designed to be a family event that everyone can take part in, and this year we are really trying to encourage teams to take part," she says. "All you need is a frock, a bike, a drink bottle, sunblock and a helmet. Men (and boys), don't be scared to show off your feminine side and join the ladies (and girls)."
More than 60 people entered last year and organisers are expecting numbers to be pumped up this long weekend. Local businesses are behind the event and have donated prizes for each category, including best decorated kids' bike.
"This year there will be prizes for team entries, and one for every child. So get your mates together and start decorating your bikes and yourselves."
After meeting at the Waihi Beach Hotel at 10am for registration, the cyclists will follow one of three routes, each with a tour leader. The "easy rider" route around town passes through the bustling centre, with its boutique shopping, fresh produce and great cafes.
The longer "pelaton" will travel to Bowentown. All routes lead back to the hotel for prizegiving at about 1pm.
The emphasis will be on safe cycling and taking time out to explore. "So grab your frock, jump on your bike and enjoy a unique, fun, cycling outing at Waihi Beach, a popular destination for all outdoor adventures," says Anna.
