Shaye Woolford Job Title: Stylist and business owner
Company: On My Hand | Props, Styling & Flora
What does your job involve?
My job is quite interchangeable. One week I may be setting up a wedding, the next I could be styling a photoshoot for a magazine or creating flower crowns for a special occasion. Then there are things like blogging and social media, prop buying and the horrid accounts. There are so many elements to the business.
What's the most challenging aspect of your role?
Having to put many different hats on all at once. Growing a business from scratch is hard, but rewarding, and there is literally no one else that can do it but you (and my super supportive husband).
What's your proudest work moment?
That would have to be one that happened only a few months ago. After two-plus years of building up the business, figuring out my aesthetic, the systems within and gaining more clarity in my direction, it was the feeling of achievement and confidence in my business, which I think is something a lot of women in business find hard to cultivate.
What training/experience have you had to prepare for your role?
Virtually none. I've always wanted to be a florist, I've always wanted to be a business owner. I saw a chance in the industry and jumped head first. I've had to learn as I go on every aspect, but I think my nine-year hospitality industry experience comes into play every day _ the people skills, the service and the adaptability. I am hoping to get to the States next year to train with one of New York's top floral stylists, which will be a huge career highlight for me.
What's the best piece of career advice you've received?
My Dad told me to always follow my gut instinct. So far it's worked.
What's the most important thing your current role has taught you?
The industry is ever-evolving, and to always stay open to change.
How would you describe your work wardrobe?
Eclectic and comfortable. I love to dress up but I always wear flats at work. Sometimes I'll be climbing trees!
