By Michele Hunter

Boxing Day spending slumped by nearly 5 per cent in the Bay of Plenty, according to figures released by Paymark which operates the Eftpos network.
Paymark, which processes more than 75 per cent of all electronic transactions in New Zealand, handled $7.6 million of transactions in the Bay of Plenty on Boxing Day - $400,000 less than last year.
The total volume of transactions was nearly 136,000 - down 6 per cent on last year.
Paymark's figures put the Bay slightly ahead of Waikato in terms of the sales and in 4th place nationally out of the 17 regions, behind Auckland, Canterbury and Wellington.
The Bay was 7th out of 17 in terms of the volume of transactions on Boxing Day.
South Canterbury was the best performing region for sales, ending slightly ahead of last year, whereas the worst performer was Marlborough where Eftpos sales were down 11 per cent.
