The doors to a historic tea kiosk at the summit of Mt Eden in Auckland may soon be opened once again.
After being vacant for many years, the Tupuna Maunga o Tamaki Makaurau Authority said it was now seeking to reinstate the building at Puhi Huia Rd as a cafe.
The kiosk building was commissioned by the Mount Eden Borough Council, and erected on the northern terrace of Mt Eden in 1926.
In the past it has been used as a tea room and a restaurant.
Chair of the Maunga authority, Paul Majurey, said that the ideal operator would have values that complement the spiritual, cultural and historical significance of the site.
"There is a lot of history here - both Maori and contemporary history.
"This is a special place and it represents a wide-ranging set of values. Maungawhau (Mt Eden) is a repository of people and relationships over the centuries and it is also very important to the Auckland communities of today. It's a place folk go to reflect, to be with families and to take time out.
The building has recently undergone earthquake strengthening, and was fully compliant with building standards.
